What is Gestational Cholestasis and How Is It Treated? What are the Symptoms of Pregnancy Cholestasis?

Gestational cholestasis is itching that usually occurs in pregnant women. This itching is caused by liver disorders during pregnancy or the accumulation of bile salts in the skin.

This cholestasis, or itching, does not cause any spillage on the mother's skin and may generally begin to appear in the last 5 months of the pregnancy period.

Although gestational cholestasis is very rare, it may be harmful for the baby if the necessary treatment is not done in time. For this reason, expectant mothers should listen to themselves well while they are pregnant and should definitely consult a doctor if they encounter any symptoms of cholestasis.

Pregnant women with multiple pregnancies, women with liver disease before pregnancy, and women experiencing cholestasis during pregnancy of their first-degree relatives are at higher risk of cholestasis than normal pregnancies.

     How Is Pregnancy Cholestasis Treated?

First of all, the month of pregnancy of the expectant mother who has cholestasis is very important in the treatment process. Because if it is close to birth, the expectant mother should be given birth immediately. If there is still a birth, if the baby has not completed its development, the doctor should do some blood tests to understand the level of cholestosis. This blood test should be done while the expectant mother is on an empty stomach. If intense cholestasis is found in the blood test and there is more time for the birth of the baby, drug treatment should be applied first. While the use of these drugs continues, we should continue to have regular medical examinations.

Another question that pregnant women are curious about about cholestasis is whether cholestasis in pregnancy recurred after treatment. Yes, even though pregnant women have survived this disease,

they can be caught. Therefore, they should continue to have regular blood tests and health checks.
